BRADFORD, VT — Arnold M. “Arnie” Rich passed away at the age of 85, surrounded by family members on February 23, 2021 at DHMC after a brief illness. He was born December 19th, 1935 to Dwight and Nellie Rich in Hanover, NH and grew up on Lyme Road. He graduated from Hanover High School in 1954. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years as an airplane mechanic. He was stationed in Alaska for two years, in Texas for one year. During his last year of service in Georgia, he met his wife, Myrtle Lee. They were married in June of 1958. They came back to Hanover, NH, where they built a house on Lyme Road and raised their children.
Arnie worked for Trumbull Nelson for several years and other local businesses. In 1973 he started Arnie Rich Building & Remodeling. His business grew to 20 employees including his sons, and together they built many houses in the Upper Valley. During this time he also plowed many driveways and in later years operated a rubbish removal business.
Arnie’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, football and feeding the birds.
For many years he spent most weekends at his camp in Pittsburg, NH, shared by his dear friends Alan and Ellie Fullington. Together they all enjoyed fishing and playing cards with their families and friends.
Arnie was very well known to the community and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He and Myrtle opened their home and hearts to many over the years. His kindness, along with his infectious smile and sense of humor, made everyone feel welcome.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle, of Enfield, NH, daughter Dianna Rowell (Allen), of Norwich, VT, sons Timothy Rich (Terri) of Enfield, NH, and Thomas Rich (Sherry) of Piedmont, SC, grandchildren Tracey, Cory, Christie, Ian and Elise Rich and three great grandchildren, his sisters Pauline Gaines (William) of San Diego, CA, Sylvia Cross of Raynham, MA, brother Perley Rich (Donna) of Canaan, NH and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his companion Jill Doneski and his cherished dog, Zoe.
