Here’s a look at how former Upper Valley high school athletes die on their various college sports teams this spring:
Baseball
Southern New Hampshire freshman pitcher Jordy Allard (Woodstock/Hartford) made five appearances for a total of six innings. He allowed eight hits and eight runs, four of them earned, while striking out three batters and walking five. His ERA was 6.00. … Caleb Broughton (West Lebanon/Lebanon), a freshman infielder at Bucknell (17-27-1), started three of the seven games he played for the Bison. He was hitless in 12 at-bats. … Freshman pitcher Will Austin (Sunapee) was part of Plymouth State’s 16-19 campaign. He made nine appearances totaling 13⅔ innings and was 1-1 with a 7.24 ERA and 19 hits allowed. … Stevenson (Md.) University was 20-20 with freshman outfielder Nate Perkins (West Lebanon/Lebanon) earning 19 at-bats in 17 games and hitting .211. … Colby-Sawyer College (6-25) won the second-fewest games during a season in program history and is 45-92 during six seasons in the North Atlantic Conference. However, senior infielder Doug Avellino (Woodstock) led the Chargers with a .372 batting average and started 26 of 28 games in which he played. … Lyndon State (20-20) received a .368 batting average and 32 RBIs from sophomore outfielder Codi Smith (Hartford) in 39 games. Smith also made three pitching appearances, starting twice and going 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA. … Keene State was 15-19 with sophomore pitcher Andrew Houde (Newport) throwing a team-high 58⅓ innings and going 4-3 with a 6.29 ERA. … Springfield was 23-14-2 with senior pitcher Jack Weinberger (Sunapee) making 12 appearances, totaling 22 innings. He was 1-1 with two saves and a 2.78 ERA. … Henry Day (Canaan/Holderness), a St. Lawrence freshman utility player, appeared in five games for the Saints (7-26-1). … New Hampshire Technical Institute was 11-18 with sophomore first baseman and pitcher Walt Hammond (Canaan/Mascoma), who had 16 hits in 40 at-bats for a .400 average. On the mound, he made eight relief appearances, totaling 12⅓ innings. He posted a 10.22 ERA. … Chase Hussey (Claremont/Stevens) was a junior pitcher for UMass Dartmouth (25-15). He made four appearances totaling 3⅓ innings… Will Smith (Norwich/Hanover) batted .324 with 12 RBIs and a .950 fielding percentage and played in 25 games for Roanoke (Va.) College. The freshman outfielder helped the Maroons go 31-11. … Sophomore pitcher Zach Mattos (New London) started eight of the 14 games he played in for the College of St. Jospeh (Vt.). He was 5-4 with a 3.86 ERA and tossed six complete games. The Fighting Saints were 15-35.
Men’s Lacrosse
Sophomore attackman George Geraghty (Norwich/Hanover) got into seven games and had two assists for St. Anselm (11-5). … St. Lawrence (12-5) enjoyed the services of freshman midfielder Dan Robinson (Bridgewater/Woodstock), freshman long-stick midfielder Conner Black (Woodstock) and junior defender Owen Manley (KUA). Robinson started two of the 11 games in which he played and scored three goals. Black played in four games and Manley in eight. … Logan Bateman (Claremont/Stevens) started every game as a freshman defenseman for Regis (Mass.) College. The Pride was 4-11. … Junior midfielder Conor Austin (Norwich/Hanover) played in two games for Skidmore (8-8). Teammate and junior attackman Eric Megnia (KUA) played in every game and started all but one, leading the squad with 47 points on 28 goals and 19 assists. … Senior goaltender Rick Kronenwett (KUA) started one of the five games in which he appeared for Nazareth (N.Y.) College (5-12). He was 0-1 with a ..429 save percentage and a 13.43 GAA. Teammate and sophomore defender Tristan Gosselin (Hanover) started 12 of the 17 games in which he appeared and had two goals and two assists. … Curry (Mass.) College was 10-6 with senior defenseman Jack Boillotat (Hanover) starting every game and scooping up 19 ground balls. … Rensselaer (12-4) had senior midfielder and co-captain Oliver Kaija (Woodstock) start all 12 games in which he played, winning 51 percent of his faceoffs as the Engineers’ main man on draws. … Johnson State (0-10) featured junior midfielders Austin Walters (Grantham/Lebanon) and David Albright (Grantham/Lebanon), freshman attackman Collin Campbell (Woodstock), freshman midfielder Dylan Griffin (Bradford/Oxbow), senior midfielder Rhys Keenhold (Randolph) and sophomore defender Hayden Tomlinson (Bradford/Oxbow). The Badgers were outscored, 199-32, and are 36-118 during the last 14 seasons. … Assumption College freshman midfielder Justin Norris (New London) helped the Greyhounds go 7-6. He appeared in 12 games and had one goal. … Australian native Kenny Speak (KUA) was a junior attackman at Endicott (Mass.) College, for which he started five of the 18 games in which he played. He had six goals and 11 assists. The Gulls were 7-11. … Senior Ed Doton (Barnard/Woodstock) played defense for Castleton (10-8), starting every game and scooping 40 ground balls. Freshman long-stick midfielder Luc Issa (Woodstock) started two of the 18 games in which he appeared and had one assist. … Part of the New England College squad that defeated Castleton for the North Atlantic Conference title was freshman midfielder Jordan Hammond (Grantham/Lebanon). It was the Pilgrims’ third consecutive title and they earned their fourth NCAA Division III tournament berth in the last five years. Hammond appeared in four games. … Senior defenseman Chris Anderson (KUA) started every game for Beloit (Wis.) College (8-8). He had 41 ground balls. … Merrimack (Mass.) College won the NCAA Division II title. The Warriors (18-1) included senior defensive midfielder Hunter Schmell (Woodstock), who had a goal, an assist and eight ground balls in the championship game. Schmell appeared in 18 games and produced eight goals and three assists. … Maine’s Thomas College enjoyed the services of senior defender Conner Blair (North Hartland/Woodstock), who started all nine games in which he played. He had an assist and 36 ground balls for the Terriers (2-9).
Women’s Lacrosse
St. Lawrence senior attacker Rachel Boghosian (Hanover) was joined on the roster by freshman goaltender Sophie Cardenali (Hanover). Boghosian was third on the team in scoring with 34 goals and an assist. She started all 15 games she played for the Saints (4-11). Cardenali started two of the three games in which she played, going 1-1 with a .511 save percentage and 10.74 GAA. … Georgetown (12-7) lost in the opening round of the NCAA Division I tournament. Senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover) started every game, scoring 22 goals and adding nine assists. … Freshman attacker Johanna Copeland (Hanover) helped Wesleyan go 12-7 and had four goals in eight games. … Colby-Sawyer was 10-6 with freshman attacker Grace Vosburgh (Woodstock) starting two of the 12 games in which she played and producing seven goals and one assist. … Freshman midfielder Amelia Lubrano (Hanover) started one of the three games in which she played for Colby (9-7), posting a goal and an assist. … Junior midfielder Sophia Lubrano (Hanover) and sophomore defender Elle Brine (Lebanon) helped Bowdoin go 14-6. Lubrano had eight goals and seven assists while appearing in every game. Brine started one of the nine contests in which she played. … Sophomore midfielder Brenna Peterson (Lebanon) played five games for Gordon (Mass.) College. The Fighting Scots were 7-11. … University of the Cumberlands sophomore midfielder Samantha Tullar (Randolph Center/Randolph) was an NAIA All-American for the second consecutive year and added the NAIA player of the year award as well. The Williamsburg, Ky.-based Patriots (20-2). who outscored their opponents, 404-172, lost in the national semifinals. Tullar started and played in every game but one, producing 118 goals and 51 assists. … Williams went 6-9, as senior midfielder Kate Pattison (Hanover) started every game. … Junior defender Joanna Schafer (Meriden/KUA) started every game for Bates (7-8). … Senior attacker Storm Sideleau (KUA) led Vassar (5-8) with 48 points on 40 goals and eight assists. … Middlebury (20-3) reached the NCAA Division III title game with senior defender Evie Keating (Hanover) scooping up three ground balls in that contest and 52 during the season. Keating started all of the 17 games in which she played. Freshman midfielder Maddie Lyons (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in six Panthers contests and had one goal. … Sophomore midfielder Kelly Brigham (Norwich/Hanover), who had never before played lacrosse, walked on at Connecticut College. She started two of the five games in which she appeared for the Camels (4-11). … Kyra Taylor (Meriden/Lebanon) was a junior defender for the University of New England (8-9). She started all 16 games in which she played and had one goal.
Softball
Johnson State (6-22) played with an 11-woman roster, including senior pitcher and infielder Kaitlyn Woodward (White River Junction/Hartford) and sophomore infielder Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel/Whitcomb). Woodward batted .370 in 28 games and made 22 pitching appearances, starting 16 times. She was 4-13 with a 6.71 ERA, earned first team All-NAC honors and was the conference’s senior scholar-athlete for softball. LaPerle batted .214 in 28 games. … Lyndon State recorded a 1-23 record. Freshman infielder and pitcher Taylor Hollis (Corinth/Thetford) played in 10 games and batted .273. She pitched three times, starting once, and was 0-1. Hornets junior infielder Elizabeth Stoddard (Woodsville) appeared in two games. … Loretta Blakeney (Barnard/Woodstock) was a freshman who pitched two innings and struck out two batters for Castleton (11-17). … Freshman outfielder Brittany Brocar (Bradford/Oxbow) appeared in two games for Norwich (12-16). … Mary Bourgeois (Bradford/Oxbow), a freshman pitcher for Johnson and Wales (R.I.) College, made 11 appearances, going 1-0 with a 5.44 ERA. She struck out eight batters and walked 16. Offensively, she had two hits in six at-bats for the Wildcats (32-13), who won their fourth consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference title and played three games in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Men’s Track
Ithaca (N.Y.) College freshman Raphael Harriman (Lebanon) ran a personal-best 59.59 seconds in the 400 meters in April. He was 53rd out of 55 competitors in the event at the Cortland (N.Y.) State Invitational. Bombers senior Kevin Pomer (Grantham/Lebanon) was seventh out of 11 competitors in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and 16th out of 19 leapers in the triple jump (39 feet, 8.5 inches) at the Liberty League championships, during which Ithaca finished third out of eight teams. … A year after winning the NAC meet’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Colby-Sawyer sophomore Liam Fleming (Orford/Rivendell) was second in 11:11.85. He was third in the 5,000 at 16:53.74. Teammate and classmate Ben Jones (Enfield/Mascoma) repeated his third-place performance in the 1,500 from a year ago. This time, he crossed in 4:24.46. Jones was second in the 5,000 at 16:43.22. The Chargers were second in the seven-team event. … Junior Cole Chapman (Post Mills/Thetford) set a personal best in the long jump for Southern Connecticut, soaring 22 feet, 6.25 inches and finishing seventh in the event at the Northeast-10 Conference championships. The Owls won the 11-team event. … Franklin Pierce senior Martin Gradijan (Lebanon), competed in nine track events and also ran cross country during his career. He was fifth out of 18 competitors in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:44.74) and 23rd out of 24 runners in the 5,000 (16:58.90) at the Northeast-10 Conference championships. The Ravens were fourth out of 11 teams. Gradijan will remain with the program as a graduate assistant and its recruiting coordinator. … Castleton junior Clayton Bailey (North Hartland/Hartford) threw the javelin 148 feet, 11 inches, at a meet in early April. He finished second out of 17 competitors. The Spartans finished fourth out of seven teams at the NAC championships, and senior Jackson Dwyer (Quechee/Hartford) was sixth out of 24 throwers in the discus during that meet. He recorded 111 feet, 6 inches. Another Spartans junior, Tayler Larmie (Wilder/Hartford) advanced to the New England NCAA Division III championships and was 15th out of 24 throwers in the hammer toss, hurling 148 feet. … Ben Chaimberg (Hanover) was a University of Chicago junior who helped the Maroons finish third out of seven teams at the University Athletic Association championships. He was part of a fourth-place 4×800 relay team (7:53.43), a fifth-place 4×400 group (3:22.64) and was seventh out of seven runners in the 400 (52.03). Earlier in the season, he ran a 48.78 split for a 4×400 quartet that finished in 3:18.02. The split and relay times were both second in the program’s history.
Women’s Track
Senior Taylor Downs (West Lebanon/Lebanon) ran once for Southern New Hampshire this spring, producing a 100-meter time of 16.47 seconds, placing her 37th at the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational. … Mariah Ramos (Lebanon) competed in javelin, discus and shot put for Johnson State, which finished last among six teams at the NAC championships and featured an 11-competitor roster. The junior was seventh in the javelin at 76 feet, 7 inches and 15th in the discus at 64 feet, 1 inch. Ramos was 14th in the shot at 25 feet, 2.5 inches. … Earlham (Ind.) College senior Annalee Wilson (Lyme/Hanover) was third out of seven competitors in the pole vault at the Indiana Division III meet. She cleared 10 feet, 2.75 inches, and the Quakers finished first out of seven teams. Wilson also was 15th and last in the 200 meters, clocking 29.56 seconds. … Aparna Alavilli (Hanover), a senior at Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University, was second out of 14 runners in the University Athletic Association’s 10,000 meters at 36:27.48. She was eighth out of 22 runners in the 5,000 at 18:00.44. The Tartans finished fourth out of seven schools. … Vermont senior Margaret Gish (Sharon/Sharon Academy) was 24th out of 28 runners in the 10,000 meters at the NEICAAA championships, clocking 39:55.40, nine seconds off her personal best. … Kayla Gould (Orford/Thetford Academy), a Plymouth State junior pole vaulter, cleared 8 feet, 8.25 inches at the New England Alliance championships. She was seventh out of 10 competitors and the Panthers were eighth out of 12 teams. … Cornell finished fourth at the Ivy League championships, with freshman Corinne Kennedy (Lebanon) finishing 18th out of 20 runners in the 400 (58.80) and serving as part of a sixth-place 4×400 relay team that recorded a time of 3:46.27. … Husson (Maine) College won the NAC title. Junior Jessica Dessert (Lebanon) was second out of six competitors in the pole vault (8 feet, 11.5 inches), fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:16.05) and 10th in the 100 hurdles (19.95).
Other Sports
Junior golfer Tyler Silver (Lebanon) competed three times for Southern New Hampshire. His best showing was a tie for 26th out of 50 competitors during April’s Penmen Spring Invitational, when he shot rounds of 79 and 76 and finished a combined 11 strokes over par. … Trinity (Conn.) College senior Nate Choukas (Hanover) helped the Bantams win the four-team NESCAC Championships and finish 34th of 42 teams at the NCAA Division III championships. He was 12th out of 22 golfers at the NESCAC championships and tied for 168th place out of 189 competitors at the NCAAs. He was one of Trinity’s three first-team all-conference selections, earning that honor for the second time. … Colby-Sawyer junior Maggie Kinder (Woodsville) was second in novice flat and in novice fences during a show at Endicott College in March. … St. Lawrence tennis junior Carly Jefferson (Sunapee/KUA) was 2-2 in singles. The Saints were 9-10. … Senior Claire Callahan (Norwich/Hanover) rowed in the varsity eight for Hamilton (N.Y.) College, which finished second (7:24.39) at the New York State Collegiate Championships. The Continentals entered that event ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III poll. … Cornell freshman cox Hannah Marks (Hanover) was in the second varsity eight for the Big Red’s April 28th clash with Dartmouth. Her boat finished in 5:56.7, two seconds behind the Big Green. … Ben Lynch (Lyme/Hanover), a junior for the Wesleyan crew, rowed in the seventh seat for the first varsity boat much of the season. The Cardinals were eighth out of 17 teams at the National Invitational Rowing Championships and Lynch was named a co-captain for his senior year. … Sophomore Emily Calendrella (Hanover) crewed in two races for the Tufts (Mass.) University coed sailing team at the New England team championships, where they finished 11th out of 12 teams. … Vassar women’s rugby lost only twice during the 2017-18 academic year. Sophomore wing Amy Hansen (Lebanon) started once during the spring season for the Brewers.
