The 18-year-old from Hartland came up short on Tuesday in bids to advance to semifinal action in a pair of races. A day after making the eight-athlete final in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, the Upper Valley Aquatic Club competitor missed the semifinals in the 200 free and 200 individual medley at the CenturyLink Center.
Racing in the ninth of 11 morning heats in the 200 free, Cox couldn’t earn a slot in the 16-swimmer semifinals with a time of 2 minutes, 0.62 seconds. Although ranked 27th of 109 competitors after heats, Cox missed out on a semifinal berth by just 0.62 seconds.
Cox swam a time of 2:18.71 in her 200 IM heat, good for 58th out of 118 competitors in the field, but about 3 seconds out of a semifinal slot.
The recent Kimball Union Academy graduate’s first visit to the Olympic Trials included qualification in Monday’s 400 free final. Cox had the seventh-fastest time in prelims and finished eighth in her first Olympic Trials final.
Cox is bound for the University of Arizona women’s swim team this fall.

Cordes Baker (USC Lancaster) and Wes Engle (Texas State) will get starts on the mound for Upper Valley, which earned a 4-3 win over the Sanford Mainers on Monday night thanks to a solo home run from Charlie Concannon (St. Joseph’s) in the 13th inning. Tonight’s games will be the only regular-season meetings between the Hawks and Schooners this summer.
The Schooners have won four out of their last five games, dropping a four-game win streak with a 4-3 loss to New Bedford on Saturday. With the rescheduled game, Mystic will have had two days off headed into tonight’s twinbill.
