Claremont — The SAU 6 School Board voted on Thursday night to hire Keith Pfeifer as interim superintendent of the district, which includes Claremont and Unity. Pfeifer’s hiring is contingent upon “successful negotiations,” the board said in the motion to support the recommendation from the committee that conducted the search.

Pfeifer addressed the board briefly, talking about his 45 years in public education that began in the Philadelphia school district as a social studies teacher. He has also worked in education in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire, where he worked as superintendent or interim superintendent in Grantham, Littleton and Mascoma. SAU 6 board Chairwoman Marjorie Erickson, of Unity, said 16 candidates applied for the job and three were interviewed.

The board terminated the contract of former superintendent Middleton McGoodwin last month. Cory LeClair, assistant superintendent, has served as acting superintendent. The target date set by the board for the interim to start was Aug. 15.
