Woodsville — Eric Thornton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and pitched 2 innings of one-run ball with a strikeout, but host Woodsville otherwise found itself searching for highlights in a season-opening 10-3 NHIAA Division IV baseball loss to Littleton on Monday.

Jaret Bemis, Jordan Clark and Seanon Mae each scored for the Engineers. Clark, Mae, Thornton and Zach Moore combined for three strikeouts on the mound.

“We started off rusty facing a good pitcher,” Cox said. “Toward the end, we were coming out of it with some baserunners. … We had a couple of fielders that weren’t used to being outside.”

Woodsville will host Gorham on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Softball

Proctor 13, South Royalton 12

Proctor, Vt. — The Phantoms scored two runs to leapfrog South Royalton in a season-opening battle of cross-state teams, overcoming the Royals’ one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“I thought it was a real good game,” said Royals head coach Roger McCrillis. “We’re kind of a young team.”

Megan Carbino led the way offensively with a double that drove in three runs and five RBIs. “With lots of singles,” McCrillis added.

Rachel Moore pitched to 26 batters over four innings, amassing one strikeout, one walk, nine hits and 10 runs. Paige Ballantine entered the game in relief and pitched to 14 batters over three innings with two walks, six hits and three runs allowed.

South Royalton (0-1) will host Whitcomb-Rochester at home on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Woodsville 17, Littleton 3

Woodsville — The Engineers dropped Littleton in their season opener. Woodsville (1-0) will take on Gorham at home on Wednesday.

Boys Lacrosse

Champlain Valley 14, Hanover 7

Hanover — Reed Winter and Jake Acker each scored two goals, but the Marauders couldn’t recover from a first-half CVU onslaught.

Graham Penfield, Brian Seltzer and Tristan Gosselin each scored once for Hanover in the loss. George Geraghty added two assists. Zander Lingelbach-Pierce and Joe Warhold each split time in net and combined for nine saves.

Hanover racked up seven and a half minutes of penalties. The Marauders (0-1) will travel to Thornton Academy (Maine) on Friday.

Vergennes 13, Randolph 4

Vergennes, Vt. — Randolph’s Peter Tallman scored a goal and added an asssist in the Galloping Ghosts’ nine-goal loss to Vergennes.

Bailey Pearson made 18 saves. Kaji Lungu, Trent Gregorie and Caleb Bridges scored goals for Randolph (0-2). The Ghosts will host Lamoille on Saturday.

Boys Tennis

Hanover 7, Salem 2

Salem, n.h. — Benny Gantrish and John He led the way in both singles and doubles as Hanover stretched its early-season unbeaten streak to three games.

Duolan Guo and Boris Devitskiy added wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to the victory. The pair added a win on No. 3 doubles as well. Hanover swept all three doubles matches.

Hanover (3-0) will play Friday on the road against Bedford.

Men’s Soccer

Chargers’ Wilkinson
Departing for Maine

New London — Colby-Sawyer men’s soccer coach Craig Wilkinson resigned on Monday after three seasons with the Chargers, having accepted the job of head soccer coach at Maine’s Bridgton Academy.

The Chargers went 33-24-5 with Wilkinson, a record that included a 19-5-3 mark in the North Athlantic Conference. Colby-Sawyer made ECAC tournament appearance in all three of Wilkinson’s seasons, making the tourney finals in 2014.

Athletic director Bill Foti said in a news release that he hopes to hire Wilkinson’s replacement by late spring.

Sailing

Three Top-Fives for Green

Hanover — The Dartmouth sailing team placed in the top five of three races over the weekend.

Dartmouth sent six sailors to Boston for the Mystic Lake Team Race, taking third place with a 9-3 race record behind host Tufts (11-1) and runner-up Brown (9-3). Another half-dozen Big Green competitors joined for the New England Team Race Championship in New London, Conn., going 7-4 to take fourth place behind Yale (10-1), Boston College (8-3) and Brown (7-4). The Big Green also competed at the Emily Wick Regatta, hosted by Connecticut College, and claimed fifth.

The Big Green has another trio of events this weekend, sending teams to the Navy Spring Race, the Savin Hill Central regatta and the Oberg Trophy regatta.
