Woodstock — The Upper Valley Vixens women’s roller derby team has kicked off its season and is still interested in adding new candidates to its program.

Twin State Derby, which oversees the Vixens’ team, will hold its final rookie information night on April 27 from 7-9:30 p.m. at Enfield’s Great View Roller Rink. The evening is open to any woman interested in either hitting the track competitively or becoming a referee. Bring athletic clothing, a mouthguard and a water bottle. The Vixens will split their home bouts between their traditional home, Woodstock’s Union Arena, with two contests at Spartan Arena in Rutland this season. The remaining schedule:

April 29: Vixens at Green Mountain Roller Derby, Champlain Valley Exposition, Essex Junction, Vt., 6-8 p.m.

May 6: Fog City Rollers (New Brunswick) at Vixens, Union Arena, 6-8 p.m.

June 10: TBA at Vixens, Spartan Arena, Rutland, 6-8:30 p.m.

Aug. 12: TBA at Vixens, Spartan Arena, Rutland, 6-8:30 p.m.

Sept. 9: Vixens (B-team) at Elm City Derby Damez, Living Memorial Park, Brattleboro, Vt., 6-8:30 p.m.

Sept. 23: Monadnock Roller Derby at Vixens, Union Arena, 6-8 p.m.

Save a Stray 5K

Sunapee — The Sullivan County Humane Society is seeking runners and walkers for its annual Save a Stray 5K on May 20, beginning and ending at Sunapee Harbor.

The race is a benefit for SCHS, which is hoping to raise $15,000 through registrations, runner sponsorships and donations. The pre-registration cost is $20, with T-shirts going to the first 100 runners to register. The race-day fee is $25. Kids ages 12 and under can participate for free.

The top male and female winners will receive $50, while the top three finishers in each age group will receive SCHS mugs. A raffle and post-race cookout are also planned.

Race Around the Lake

Barnard — The second event in the seven-race Upper Valley Running Series will be the BarnArts Race Around the Lake, a five- and 10-kilometer road and trail race around Silver Lake on May 21.

The races serve as a fundraiser for youth programming at BarnArts, a community arts organization. Both routes will take runners and walkers over back roads and scenic trails, starting and ending in Silver Lake State Park.

Advance registration, at a cost of $30 through May 14, is available by way of the link to the Upper Valley Running Series website (www.uppervalleyrunningclub.org). The cost to run increases to $35 on May 15 through race day. The 10K starts at 10:30 a.m., with the 5K to follow.

Rock Your Camo 5K

Claremont — The Greater Claremont Chamber of Commerce and the Red River Charitable Foundation will present the third Rock Your Camo 5K road race and Dirty Dash at the Arrowhead Recreation Area on May 20.

The event is a fundraiser for various veterans groups in the Upper Valley, to which all proceeds from the races will be donated. The day includes food, refreshments, face painting and a lot of camo.

The cost for the 5K is $30 for adults, $20 for active military, $15 for students and $10 for children ages 12 and under. The Dirty Dash, a muddy obstacle course for kids ages 12 and younger, is also $10. The Dirty Dash starts at 10 a.m., and the 5K kicks off at 11 a.m.

Bethel Rec Fundraiser

Bethel — The Bethel Recreation Committee will hold a black-tie fundraiser featuring the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s string quintet, along with a dinner by Willy Walker, on May 13, beginning at 5:45 p.m., at the Bethel Town Hall.

The evening kicks off fundraising efforts directed toward the second phase of the committee’s master plan project at the Bethel Recreation Center. Participants have two options to join the event: a $100 ticket including dinner and the music program or a $25 balcony seat to the concert. A silent auction will take place during the evening as well, with offerings from several Bethel-area businesses.
