NEW LONDON, NH — Gordon P. McKinnon (“Mac”), 94, of Hilltop Place, died Monday, October 12, 2020 at New London Hospital.

Mac was born in Dexter, ME on November 27, 1925 the son of Hugh and Janet (Wallace) McKinnon.

Mac graduated from Stevens High School in Claremont, NH in 1943 and then served overseas in WWII with the US Army. He returned to attend the University of New Hampshire and graduated as an English major in 1948. He was a reporter for several years with various New England newspapers. He was the Editor- in-Chief for the National Fire Protection Association in Boston, Massachusetts and retired from there in the late 80s.

He and Betty lived in Sharon, Massachusetts for over 30 years and then relocated to Springfield, NH where they lived for 13 years. They have been at Hilltop Place in New London for the last 20 years.

Mac’s hobby was building wooden model boats from scratch; a number of his boats are on display at the NH Boat Museum in Wolfeboro where he was a volunteer. He also belonged to an area model boat club.

Mac learned to ski at Mount Sunapee and enjoyed downhill skiing into his senior years.

He served on the New London Board of Fire Wards for a number of years and was a volunteer at The Fells.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Donahue) of New London, NH; five nieces, Ann Walls of Concord, NH, Alison McGoff of Iowa City, IA, Rosemary Johnson of Bozeman, MT, Meredith Spyker of Glenwood Springs, CO and Elizabeth McGoff of Bozeman, MT.

Services will be held by the family at a later date.
