Woodstock — Green Mountain Power repair crews, some using chains on truck tires to navigate icy roads, continued work on Thursday to restore power to homes and businesses that have been without electricity since Monday night or Tuesday.

GMP said it had restored power to more than 90,000 customers, but as of 11:30 p.m., 7,500 remained affected by the wet, heavy snow, including 381 in Woodstock, 132 in Hartland, and 144 in Barnard.

GMP said there was “severe widespread damage in central and southern Vermont,” and crews were still dealing with “multiple trees and lines down, often in off-road, backcountry locations.” New outages also arose from “cement-like snow frozen on lines and trees combined with already saturated ground from weeks of rain” that caused trees to topple, GMP said. Power was expected to be restored in most places by today, but some outages may run into Saturday.

Washington Electric Co-op reported some 1,300 customers without power as of 8 p.m. on Thursday, many of them in Orange County.

Seventy-one New Hampshire Electric Co-op customers also were listed as without power at 11:30 p.m., including some residents in Newport, Grafton and Enfield.
