Hanover — The Upper Valley Rowing Foundation’s Lebanon Crew junior team won the fourth Granite State Fours Championship on Sunday on the Connecticut River.

The regatta consisted of two varsity and two novice crews from Lebanon, Brewster Academy, Derryfield School, Dublin School, Hollis Brookline Crew and Souhegan Crew. All raced in morning heats before competing in afternoon finals, where team points were awarded on the basis of results.

Working with a light wind and moderate tailcurrent, Lebanon won two finals to get things started. The girls first novice squad won its race in 5 minutes, 9.6 seconds, while the boys second varsity prevailed in 4:46.7. Lebanon also placed second twice, third twice and fourth twice to accumulate 16 points, one better than Dublin and Hollis Brookline, to win the title.

Dublin claimed individual cups by winning the boys and girls first varsity races. The Lebanon squad consisted of athletes from Lebanon High, Thetford Academy, Woodstock Union High, Hartford High, Mid Vermont Christian School and the Lebanon and Plainfield middle schools along with some home-schooled competitors.

Hanover Wins U-32 Meet

East Montpelier, Vt. — Despite fielding just seven girls and 10 boys and facing nearly 20 foes in each gender, the Hanover Parks and Recreation track and field team won both divisions of the U-32 Middle School Invitational on Saturday.

Daisy Onyango and Sam Murray swept the awards for outstanding athletes. Onyango won a pair of races, the girls 100-meter dash (14.03 seconds) and 200 dash (28.98), placed fifth in the long jump (12 feet, 6.75 inches) and joined Meg Frost, Elena Mierke and Neve Ristino in a winning effort in the 4×100 relay (59.04). Murray also claimed two victories, in the boys 800 run (2:20.4) and 1,500 run (4:33.0), and he partnered with Matt Baskin, Jack Lange and Adam Gilbert-Diamond for a win in the boys 4×400 relay (4:19.05).

Additionally, the Hanover boys claimed the 4×100 relay (54.33) with the quartet of Spencer Lawe, Luke Szczepiorkowski, Jonathan Oriol and William Malley. Hanover athletes racked up 20 top-four results in individual and relay competition.

Hartford received winning results from Ben Gilbert in the boys discus (95-6), Gavynn Kenney in the boys javelin (119-10) and Sophie Trombley in the girls 800 (2:37.10) and long jump (12-11). Hartford boys placed second behind Hanover, and the girls took third.

Oxbow’s boys, who finished third as a team, delivered three individual wins, with Jaden Thomson taking the 200 dash (26.81), Matthew Hayes claiming the 400 dash (1:01.58) and Lyle Rinehimer winning the long jump (15-8). Isabella Chen’s runner-up finish in the long jump (12-8.5) topped the Oxbow girls.

Wynter Simack placed second in the girls javelin (76-1) to highlight South Royalton’s day at U-32. Connor Allen was third in the boys shot put (32-2.5) for Whitcomb.

LSC Surge Girls Split

Suncook, n.h. — The Lightning Soccer Club U8 Surge girls opened the offensive spigots in a 7-3 defeat of Suncook on Saturday.

Aila Van Dolah got the Surge going with an early goal. Ainsley Smith posted a hat trick, Lizzie Brown scored two goals and Kayleigh Ferland slipped in another as the Surge piled all of its goals into the first half. Joanna Bujarski and Karley Hollis then blocked several Suncook bids to clinch the win.

Despite good scoring bids from Van Dolah and Bujarski as well as the defense of Kait Christensen, the Surge fell on Sunday, 2-0, to WSA Windham.

U15 Synergy Sails

Meriden — The LSC U15 Synergy quickly found its stride on a wet pitch to post a 6-1 win over Seacoast Benfica on Sunday at Kimball Union Academy’s Pope Field.

Phoebe Garfield put LSC on the board after 15 minutes, a lead Eleanor Press doubled on a pass from Avery Barton. Seacoast halved the lead shortly after halftime, but it was all Synergy from there.

Caroline Camp rebounded a Eleanor Van Aalst shot, Avery Barton scored, Camp added a second and Izzy Kachikis finished a Barton feed to set the final score. Sophie Bridge made a pair of big saves in the second half and earned the win in goal.

U11 Boys Split

Meriden — LSC’s two U11 boys soccer squad posted opposite results over the weekend.

The U11 Cyclones claimed their first win of the spring, beating the Pemi-Baker Rapids, 1-0. Ian Holmes provided the match’s lone marker, beating two defenders for a drive to the left corner of the net in the final 10 minutes of play.

The U11 Comets ran into a Boston Bolts buzzsaw, dropping a 6-3 decision in Massachusetts. To their credit, the Comets rebounded nicely from a 6-1 halftime deficit with a strong second half. Dominico Pentella, Thatcher Bacon and Ian Surgnor provided the goals.

U12 Flames Burn Brightly

Meriden — The LSC U12 Flames closed their season on a bright note, shutting out Seacoast United North Shore, 4-0, at KUA’s Carver Field on Sunday.

The Flames needed just 20 seconds to take the lead for good, Noah Winchester finishing feeds from Andrew Belk and Riley Sullivan for the goal. Theo Vassiliou fed Sullivan for the second, and Nick Galev made it 3-0 with an 18-yard drive just before halftime.

Logan Isham closed the scoring in the final eight minutes, converting a Cavan O’Brien pass inside the right post. Norwood Davis posted the shutout in goal.

U15 Sonic Gets Shutout

Meriden — The LSC U15 Sonic boys closed their spring campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 blanking of Seacoast United Benfica North Shore on Sunday at Pope Field.

After five corner kicks and two free kicks, Tyler St. Martin put the Sonic ahead to stay with a long drive late in the first half. LSC got going in earnest after the interval, with Sam Donoghue netting his first goal of the season followed by two more for the hat trick. Amane Matsuoka provided the clincher.

Dylan Moody Aness and St. Martin earned assists. Defenders Samuel Twarog, Ethan Ross, Gray Messersmith, Dylan Kotlowitz and Judd Alexander combined to aid goalie Andrew Enelow’s clean-sheet effort in the net.

Lebanon Legion Tourney

Lebanon — Guyer-Carignan American Legion Post 22 is gearing up for its annual fundraising golf tournament at Carter Country Club on June 2.

The tournament benefits the post’s American Legion baseball scholarship program, which awards $1,000 for each Post 22 player who goes on to play baseball in college, spread out over four years. Proceeds also go toward the operation of Post 22’s senior and junior Legion teams.

The 18-hole scramble for five-player teams begins with an 11 a.m. check-in for the noon start.

The tournament and barbecue continue until 6 p.m., with music and dancing scheduled for 5:30-9:30 p.m. as well. The cost to play is $125 per person, with a maximum of 16 teams. Hole sponsorships are also available for $75.

Skip Matthews Run

Lebanon — The annual Skip Matthews Memorial Race hits its 15th birthday on June 17 in downtown Lebanon. The four-mile race commemorates the life of Matthews, who died from brain cancer in 2003.

Since then, the race — which begins and ends in front of City Hall and covers part of the Northern Rail Trail — has raised money for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center’s tumor research program.

The day kicks off with Brady’s Fun Run/Walk, a one-mile route starting at 9 a.m. The four-mile run gets going at 10 a.m. River Valley Community College will provide post-race massages, and awards along with a barbecue will follow immediately after the race.

The cost to participate is $25 for adults (ages 19 and older) and $20 for youths (ages 18 and younger). There is no charge for the one-mile run run/walk. Online registration is available through the link at www.skipsrun.org. Day-of-race registration will also be available until 8:30 a.m. for the fun run/walk and 9 a.m. for the four-miler.

Shaker 7 Set

Enfield — The Enfield Village Association will fire up the annual Shaker 7 road race on June 24 for its 14th edition.

The race covers a seven-mile route around Mascoma Lake, beginning and ending at Shaker Recreation Park in Enfield. A three-mile walk option is also available. Proceeds from the Shaker 7 go toward projects and events run by the EVA, which seeks to enhance the town’s cultural, recreational and natural resources.

The cost to participate is $30 for adults and $15 for students. Online registration is available through www.enfieldmainstreet.org. Day-of-race registration will be available starting at 7:30 a.m., and both the run and walk will fire off at 9 a.m.

Save a Stray 5K

Newport — The Sullivan County Humane Society will hold its fifth Save a Stray 5K road race on June 23, beginning at the Corbin Covered Bridge.

The race, which will start at 10 a.m., is a fundraiser for SCHS, which provides help for homeless animals and sponsors spay and neuter clinics. Pre-registration is $20 and comes with a free event T-shirt for the first 100 runners to sign up. Kids under the age of 12 are free.

Race-day registration will also be available, starting at 8:30 a.m.

The day will include prizes for the top male and female finishers in several age groups, raffle prizes and a post-race barbecue, all taking place at the covered bridge.
