West Lebanon, N.H. — Pauline “Polly” Smith, 85, of West Lebanon, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Lebanon Center Genesis.

She was born at home in Post Mills, Vt. on Jan. 4, 1932. She was the daughter of Earl Robinson and Nellie O’Day of Thetford, Vt.

She was married to Richard Allen Ward of Vershire on Jan. 10, 1948, and they lived in Post Mills. Her husband predeceased her in October of 1965.

She attended a one room schoolhouse in Post Mills, and later attended Thetford Academy. Later in life she received her GED with her daughters help.

Polly was a Star-Route Mail Carrier for the Town of Thetford for about 15 years, picking up mail at the train station in East Thetford and traveling to the “Old Brick Building” in Post Mills and on to Vershire, Vt.

Pauline married Donald P. Smith Sr. on Nov. 5, 1967. They lived in Florida in the winter months and West Lebanon the rest of the year. She was predeceased by Donald in July of 1999. She was a member of the West Lebanon Congregational Church for many years and served on various committees.

She was an avid golfer, playing in clubs in Florida and at the Lake Morey Country Club in Fairlee, Vt. She also enjoyed reading and weeding her flowers.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Lewis (and husband Greg) of Strafford, Vt. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Sean Lewis (and wife, Laura) of Strafford, Vt., and Joel Lewis of Lempster, N.H. (and fiancé Christy Ash). Also surviving her are three grandchildren, Connor Lewis of Thetford, and Cassidy and Brandy Lewis of Strafford, Vt. Surviving her also are five step-children; Donny and Sandy Smith of Lebanon, N.H., Dan and Martha Smith of West Lebanon, Lonna and Lou Thiem of West Glover, Vt., Polly-Ann and Bob Stimson of Blacksburg, Va., and Bob and Sheila Goebel of Manchester, N.H. She is also survived by many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

She also leaves a friend, Sheri Lewis of Florida and a childhood friend, Bobbie Southworth of Post Mills.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Congregational Church in West Lebanon, or a charity of your choice. The funeral will be held at the Congregational Church in West Lebanon on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Post Mills Cemetery in Post Mills in the spring.
