Newport, N.H. — Gertrud Marta Elisabeth Peyron, “Trudy”, of Newport, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at the Woodlawn Care Center on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017.

Born on Dec 27, 1922 in Oskarshamn, Sweden, Trudy grew up in Paskallavik on the Baltic Sea and acquired her nursing degree in Sweden. Trudy met her future husband, Fredrik (“Fred”), while caring for his hospitalized brother at a hospital in Stockholm. They came to the United States in 1950 to pursue individual career opportunities and married in Memphis, Tenn.,  one year later. Trudy and Fred moved to Worcester, Mass., in 1952, and were blessed with two children, Elisabeth and Ted. Fred’s lumber business brought the Peyron family to Claremont, N.H., in 1960, and later to Madison, N.H., before they retired to Newport in 1978.

Throughout her life, Trudy was known for her cheerful and charismatic personality, which made her an exceptional nurse. She worked in hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, Los Angeles, Calif., West Virginia, and Worcester, Mass. Years after her retirement, Trudy was featured as the subject of a commencement address delivered by a respected doctor and former colleague titled “The Nurse With Charisma” at Elkins College, W.V. She was a source of encouragement to the patients and student nurses under her jurisdiction.

Trudy’s charismatic and magnetic personality extended beyond her career, into her rich personal life. She quickly made friends and kept in close contact with many people from each place she lived. She was always active in her community with a wonderful circle of friends, getting involved in book clubs, the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club, the Newport Thrift Store, and the hospital candy striper program, to name a few.

Trudy remained a devoted wife to Fred for 65 years, and helped campaign for him during his years as state legislatorf rom 1984 to 1996. She was an avid gardener, with a “wicked” green thumb, and believed regular walking and swim ming in cold water (preferably Lake Sunapee and the Baltic Sea) kept her young and healthy. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend. Trudy is survived by two children, Elisabeth Peyron of Claremont, and Ted Peyron  and his wife, Diane Joseph of Sunapee, N.H.; a granddaughter Sarah Peyron Murphy and her husband, Hugh Murphy, of Chapel Hill; and a great-granddaughter Sloane Peyron Murphy. She has one remaining nephew, Lasse Carlsson in Sweden. She will be missed by many and remembered fondly by all.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the First Congregational Church, 29 Croydon Turnpike, Croydon, N.H. She will be interred in the spring at Skallvik Church yard in Soderkoping, Sweden, alongside Fred and her sister-in-law, Christina Peyron.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Trudy’s name to the Richards Free Library, 58 Main St, Newport, NH 03773.
