HANOVER — More than 2,500 people took part in this year’s virtual Prouty, raising $2.8 million for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, organizers said Saturday.
The fundraising event is usually held during a single-day on the second Saturday of July. But organizers this year mixed up the format because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Participants couldn’t safely congregate at Richmond Middle School given the need for social distancing and other mitigation efforts, they said in an April announcement.
Over six weeks, Prouty cyclists, runners, rowers, golfers, hikers, walkers were asked to meet commitments and raise money for Norris Cotton. Participants from as far away as Thailand and Alaska took part in the virtual event through activities ranging from archery, fishing, unicycling and tracking squirrels, according to a news release.
”We are truly humbled by the outpouring of support our community has shown us during this global pandemic” Dr. Steven Leach, director of the cancer center, said in a news release. “The money raised, allows us to provide the incredible patient-centered care for which we are known.”
