Windsor
It was the season opener for the Yellowjackets, while Brattleboro moved to 3-0, having previously beaten St. Johnsbury and Mill River.
The game was 5-5 after three innings, but the Vermont Division I Colonels poured across seven runs in the fourth and put an exclamation point on the game with eight in the seventh.
“I’m not discouraged,” said Windsor coach Jamie Richardson, noting his club was a Division III team. “We came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game. We’ll get better.”
Dillon Green’s complete-game pitching went a long way in deciding Brattleboro’s fate. While Green had a rough third inning, he pitched one-hit ball the rest of the way, and three of his seven strikeouts came against the last three Windsor batters in the lineup. In all, Green gave up eight hits and walked three.
Windsor started Seth Balch on the mound. He lasted until the fourth and was followed by Nick Kapuscinski, Jake Meagher, Robert Slocum and Connor Gould. In addition to giving up 18 hits, Windsor hurlers allowed seven walks and four hit batsmen. The Jacks’ defense also made seven errors.
The opening part of the schedule has also not worked in Windsor’s favor. The Jacks had two previously scheduled games postponed, and they now have to face another Division I power in Hartford on Thursday at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
“It was good to have a game after practicing for four weeks,” said Richardson, who probably would have liked to have an easier start. “And now we have to go to Hartford.”
Despite the one-sided win, Brattleboro coach Chris Groeger was still able to find some areas that could have been harmful if the situation was different.
“We could have shown better damage control in their big inning,” Groeger said. “Those mistakes could cost us ball games later on.”
Brattleboro broke open the 5-5 game with a seven-run fourth inning that included four hits, three walks and two Windsor errors.
Leif Bigelow and Green each had four hits for the Colonels. Bigelow also drove in four runs.
Duncan Fraser singled in the Windsor third, and walks to Meagher and Kapuscinski followed to load the bases. Gould tripled to clear the sacks; he later scored on a Casey Husband base hit. Windsor’s sixth and final run came across in the sixth when Gould walked and later scored on a Ryland Richardson single.
Gould and Fraser each had two hits for Windsor.
