BETHEL — The contractor on the $6.4 million replacement of the Route 12 bridge over Gilead Brook north of downtown Bethel has completed abutment and pier work for the season, transportation officials said this week.

Traffic will continue on the existing bridge, with flaggers on-site stopping traffic as needed, so some delays should be expected. Contractors are expected to return in mid- to late November to set the structural steel for the new span, according to a project news release.

The replacement of the two-lane bridge, which was built in 1928 and is 326 feet long, is expected to be completed next fall.
