Amherst, n.h. — The Lightning Soccer Club U13 Breakers girls capped a scoreless championship match with a 4-3 decision on penalty kicks to win their division of the Amherst Tournament over Memorial Day weekend in southern New Hampshire.

LSC beat Queen City Club, 4-0, and Hillsboro, 5-1, to open the tournament, advancing on a wild-card slot despite a 2-1 loss to Maine’s River City. Willa McGough, Arwen Clayton, Sage McGinley-Smith and Eli Stannard provided the offense in a 3-2 semifinal defeat of River City, and the Breakers prevailed over Peabody, Mass., on PKs in the final.

McGough had a team-high five goals in the tourney, with Clayton scoring twice. Evelyn Page, McGough, Pepper Joseph and Charlotte Johnson scored the PK goals, with goalie Sally Rainey backstopping the champoinship result.

U12 Spirit Rises

Amherst, n.h. — The LSC U12 Spirit also won their bracket of the Amherst Tournament with a tiebreaker defeat of Nashua World Cup following a 1-1 title-game tie.

The Spirit beat River City Athletic (4-2) and Derry (4-1) and drew with Capital Girls (3-3) to advance to knockout play. A 4-2 win over Ocean State Soccer Club sent the team to the finals against Nashua.

The championship match went through two overtime periods before the Spirit prevailed at the spot.

U14 Storm Reigns

Amherst, n.h. — Following a second-place finish in the New England Premiership North, the LSC U14 Storm won the A bracket of the Amherst Tournament.

The Storm rallied past Kearsarge United (2-1), beat River City, Maine (5-1) and lost to Hooksett (3-2) in round-robin play. LSC bounced back with a vengeance in the semifinals, beating Hooksett, 3-0, the next day in the championship match.

Grace Davisk, Riley Craft and Gracie Gamache all scored three goals in the tourney for the Storm, which picked up goals from Carolyn North, Mikayla Stever and Kyra Russman. Abigail Koff earned a team-best three assists.

Cosmos Champs as Well

Needham, Mass. — The LSC U15 Cosmos boys won a penalty tiebreaker in the championship game of the Needham Memorial Day Tournament on Monday to top SFC New England following a scoreless match.

The Cosmos started with a 3-1 defeat of PGA Maine Phoenix and a 2-0 blanking of Bruno United FC Black. Tired from the heat and injuries, LSC managed a 2-2 tie with Shelton FC to advance.

A 2-0 defeat of GPS Maine Phoenix Blue set up the final. The victory was the Cosmos’ first in the Needham event.

U9 Kicks Strong

Wellesley, Mass. — The LSC U9 Kicks finished atop their bracket at the Wellesley Tournament, winning one match and tying three others.

The Kicks opened with a 5-5 draw against the Aztec SC Cosmos, followed by a 3-3 tie with NEFC Newton. LSC grabbed its win on the tourney’s second day and closed with a 2-2 draw against the Boston Bolts.

U9 Cyclones Slowed

Wellesley, Mass. — The LSC U9 Cyclones put up a solid effort in their Wellesley Tournament appearance, dropping three close matches before a 5-4 defeat of GPS in their final contest.

Brayden Smith and Roan Palm scored in an opening 4-2 loss to Nordic White despite strong defense from Jasper Moore and Safir Mehra. Wellesley United dropped a 4-1 defeat on the Cyclones as Palm scored his second goal on a pass from Ryan O’Hern.

South County ended the Cyclones’ run with a 2-1 win on Sunday. Zac Garfield produced a second-half clean sheet in goal, and Patrick Fitzpatrick excelled on attack. The Cyclones claimed their finale in comeback fashion, as Smith scored twice late for the win to support goals from Palm and Noi Larusson.

U10 Sonic Stays Unbeaten

Wellesley, Mass. — The LSC U10 Sonic maintained their undefeated season with three wins and a tie at the Wellesley Tournament.

Battling the heat, the Sonic opened with a 2-2 tie with the Boston Bolts behind the defense of Zach Miles, Aidan Smith and Ryder Hayes. Cabot McLeran and Jack Stadheim stored in a 2-0 shutout of NEFC Barcelona.

After a rout of Halifax City, the Sonic closed with a 3-1 defeat of Far Post. Caden Van Dolah shored up the defense, while Ian Press, Zach Tracy and Stadheim provided the goals.

Shooters Second

Needham, Mass. — The LSC U11 Shooters claimed second place in the Old North Church flight of the Needham Tournament.

After dropping a 5-3 opener to FCUSA Coastal Impact on Saturday, the Shooters rolled over NEFC, 7-3, and nicked a 2-1 decision from Nordic Soccer to advance.

The Shooters beat GPS South Shore on penalties in the semifinals following a 2-2 draw, with Joey Blackburn making a key PK save early in the process. Explosion FC took the division title by beating LSC in the final.

U12 Chargers to Semis

Needham, Mass. — After a 2-1 run through group play, the LSC U12 Chargers fell in the semifinals of the Needham Tournament to GPS N.H. Classics in an eight-round tiebreaking shootout.

The Chargers opened the tourney with a 9-0 rout of Boston Bolts Central Elite. GPS Mass. Boston White brought the Chargers back to earth in a 2-1 decision, but LSC advanced with a 4-0 shutout of NEFC United Blue.

Richie Aman converted a Ryan Oliveira drive late in regulation for a 1-1 semifinal tie with the Classics. It took eight rounds, but the Classics finally prevailed.

Strikers Take Second

Needham, Mass. — The LSC U17 Strikers also reach the final of their Needham Tournament, losing on penalties to STA Morris United of New Jersey.

The Strikers began with a 5-1 defeat of GPS Metro North Select built on a pair of Tucker Stenger goals. Julian Stott, Seth Stadheim and Luke Sandmann struck for the goals in a 3-0 shutout of Maine’s DSA United. New York’s Lake Grove Newfield laid a 1-0 loss on the Strikers in the final group match, but LSC advanced on goal differential.

Stenger netted a goal on a Mack Walton pass for a 1-0 semifinal win over a New Jersey-based foe.

Storm Boys in Finals

Needham, Mass. — The LSC U18 Storm boys reached the final of their Needham Tournament bracket, losing to Maximum Velocity FC on penalties.

MVFC dropped the Storm in their opening match, 1-0. LSC bounced back with a 4-2 defeat of GPS Mass. Metro on two Mason Thompson goals and a goalless draw with Connecticut Football CFC Chelsea behind the defense of Cole Dalton, Ian Caldwell, Hugh Townsend, Chris Morse and Tim Alibozek and goalie Tanner Durkee’s shutout play.

The Storm won a 4-3 PK decision over the Needham Rockets in the semis before a 2-1 loss to MVFC on penalties in the final.

U11 Bugs Third

Amherst, n.h. — A win, loss and tie left the LSC U11 Bugs girls third in the top bracket of the Amherst Tournament.

The Bugs beat River City, 7-0, with goals from seven different players. Hudson United handed the Bugs a 2-1 loss, but the team rallied with two late goals for a 2-2 draw in their finale.

With a Stick Lions Club Clinic

Hanover — The Hanover Lions Club will hold a free youth boys lacrosse clinic in conjunction with its annual Byrne Cup Twin State All-Star Lacrosse Games on June 25 at Hanover High School.

While the top graduating seniors from Vermont and New Hampshire compete at Merriman-Branch Field, members of the Dartmouth College men’s lacrosse team will stage the clinic on Hanover High’s upper grass field from 1-2:30 p.m. The clinic is open to boys in grades 3-8, and each player should bring equipment including sticks, helmets, arm and shoulder pads, a mouth guard and gloves. Participants are welcome to stay afterward and attend the all-star games as guests of the Lions Club.

On the Tee Post 84 Tourney

Hanover — American Legion Post 84, the new sponsor of the town’s Legion baseball program, will hold a fundraising golf tournament at Hanover Country Club on June 5.

Participants are welcome to form their own five-player teams, or individuals can have organizers assign them to a squad. The cost to play is $100 and features the 18-hole tourney along with other prizes and auction items.

At the Net Pickleball Clinic In Quechee

Quechee — Quechee Club director of tennis Chuck Kinyon will host an exhibition and clinic for the growing sport of pickleball on June 18 on the club’s outdoor tennis courts.

Tournament pickleball player Dan Gal will be on hand to put on a demonstration of the sport, which involves elements of tennis and paddle tennis.

The clinic will be staged on Quechee’s two new courts dedicated to pickleball.
