Lee, Mass. — Joseph Charles Smith, CAPT USNR(Ret) passed peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2017 in Lee, aged 91, after several years of declining health.

Born July 9, 1925, to Joseph Smith and Cecilia McMahon Smith in New York City, and graduated from Brooklyn Tech HS, Joe entered the Navy V12 program at Dartmouth in 1943, received his wings as a Naval Aviator in 1946, and graduated from Dartmouth in 1948.

After living in Ft. Lee, N.J.; Red Oaks Mill and Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Pittsburgh, Pa., the family lived for many years in Chappaqua, N.Y. After two years in Vienna they resided in Ridgefield, Conn., then after retirement in Dover and then West Lebanon, N.H.

Joined the IBM Corporation in 1951 and retired in 1982 after a series of sales, marketing and management jobs with IBM, IBM World Trade and IBM ROECE, in various New York locations and Vienna, Austria.

Rejoined the Navy Reserve in 1955, and rose to the rank of Captain before retiring in 1982.

Survived by his five children, Charlie Smith of Clearwater, Fla., Kevin Smith of South Lee, Mass., Cathy Smith of West Lebanon, N.H.; Jennifer St. James of Enfield, N.H., and Peter Smith of Houston, Texas, with 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Helen Hoyt Smith in 2000 and sister, Dorothy Schielke in 1999.

Visiting hours Friday, July 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Rand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hanover, N.H.

A funeral Mass Saturday, July 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, Hanover, followed by burial at the Hanover Center, N.H., cemetery and a reception at the Hanover Center Church.
