Thetford — The family of a child who was injured in a “near drowning incident” at a public beach on Lake Fairlee Tuesday night says their child will not survive, according to Thetford officials.
Thetford Selectboard Chairman Stuart Rogers said in an interview that emergency officials responded to Treasure Island — a beach in West Fairlee that is owned by the town of Thetford — shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday night for a report of a drowning.
In a news release from Thetford officials this afternoon, the family of the child — who is not being identified — said that their son “suffered a near drowning in the incident” and is “in the intensive care unit, and we now know he will not survive.”
The beach is posted as closed at 8 p.m. Lifeguards end their shifts at 5 p.m.
