WEST CANAAN — The only career 2,000-point scorer in the history of Mascoma High basketball is returning to the court.
Tonya Young was named the Royals’ new girls basketball coach on Tuesday afternoon. She takes over for Walt Hammond, who stepped down after four seasons in charge.
Young is a 2007 Mascoma graduate, playing on teams coached by the late Ed Kehoe that won an NHIAA Class M title in 2004 and finished runner-up the following year. Mascoma’s gym now bears Kehoe’s name.
From there, Young enjoyed a four-year career at the University of Vermont, where she scored nearly 900 points, made the all-America East second team as a senior and twice landed on the conference’s academic honor rolls. She played professionally in Portugal, Slovakia and Luxembourg after that.
“I couldn’t be happier to start this journey,” Young said in a news release. “I am excited to have the opportunity to coach at the same high school where I played. I hope to follow in my mentor Ed Kehoe’s footsteps, to have a positive impact and leave behind a legacy like my mentor left with me.”
Young is currently a first-grade teacher at Enfield Village School.
