Frisco, Texas — FC Dallas and coach Oscar Pareja have reached a mutual agreement to part ways after his five seasons as head coach and an affiliation with the organization that dates back 20 years. The team announced the move on Monday.

Pareja had 78 wins, 49 losses and 43 draws as head coach. FC Dallas had consecutive 60-point seasons in 2015 and 2016 before missing the playoffs last year and losing at home in the MLS knockout round this season.

Pareja finished his playing career with the Dallas Burn from 1998 until his retirement in 2005, then was an assistant coach the next two seasons. Pareja became director of player development for the FC Dallas youth system in 2008, then was Colorado’s coach in 2012 and 2013 before returning to FC Dallas as head coach.

Nations League: Dutch Advance

Gelsenkirchen, Germany — A dramatic comeback sent the Netherlands to the UEFA Nations League finals after ending Germany’s nightmare year with yet more disappointment in a 2-2 draw on Monday.

The comeback also meant the Dutch qualified ahead of world champion France.

At 2-0 down to Germany in the 85th minute, Dutch hopes of reaching the Nations League finals looked long gone. But Quincy Promes curled a shot past Manuel Neuer, and Virgil van Dijk followed with a second goal from close range for the point the Netherlands needed.

Olympics

Calgary Bid Dead

Calgary, Alberta — Calgary’s bid to hold the 2026 Winter Olympics is over.

The City Council voted on Monday to end the bid following last week’s nonbinding vote in which 56 percent of those who went to the polls voted against the games.

Stockholm and a joint Italian bid from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo are still in the running for 2026.

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. The venues from those games remain in use three decades later and were the foundation of plans for another games.

Curling

Disruptive Team Booted

A gold medalist curler from the Sochi Olympics has apologized for cursing and breaking brooms at an Alberta tournament. Organizers ejected him for what they said was unsportsmanlike behavior because of excessive drinking.

Ryan Fry is a member of the team skipped by Jamie Koe that was kicked out of the World Curling Tour’s Red Deer Curling Classic.

He said in a statement released by Curling Canada that his “bad lapse in judgment” was “truly disrespectful and embarrassing” and the committee was right in making the disqualification.

Curling center manager Wade Thurber told The Canadian Press on Monday the team also damaged the locker room. He says the team has apologized to the club and Fry offered to pay for damages.

Curling is a 500-year-old sport that stresses sportsmanship, and teams referee their own matches.
