HANOVER — Dartmouth College is keeping its classrooms and dormitories closed to students through the summer and also won’t open Hanover Country Club this season.
In an email to the Dartmouth community on Monday afternoon, Provost Joseph Helble said the 2020 summer term traditionally attended by all sophomores as they head into their junior year will be by “remote-learning,” continuing the practice that was set in place last month for the spring term because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Put simply, given the continuing progression of the disease, a wide geographic disparity in its containment, the continuing lack of adequate testing capability, and no widespread effective treatment, with the health and safety of our community being of paramount importance we cannot offer a residential summer term,” Helble said in the email.
Members of the current sophomore class who would rather change their so-called “D-plan” to be on campus next summer can do so, the email said.
All athletic camps and on-campus residential summer programs have also been canceled, and Hanover Country Club will be closed for the season, with membership fees to be returned, he wrote.
His email said the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts will also remain closed through August, with some arts programming continuing to be offered online.
Dartmouth earlier this month said it was postponing graduation, which traditionally is held in mid-June.
Online classes for the summer term are slated to begin on June 25, with final exams ending on Sept. 1.
